Motherhood is deemed as a blessing of God.

Unfortunately, not all the women are able to conceive naturally due to some physical complications. Apart from IUI (Intra Uterine Insemination) and IVF (In Vitro Fertilization), surrogacy remains to be a viable option for many couples to fulfill their desire for parenthood.

IUI :- Intrauterine Insemination is a fertility treatment that involves placing sperm inside a woman’s uterus to facilitate fertilization. The goal of this treatment is to increase the number of sperm that reach the fallopian tubes and subsequently increase the chance of fertilization.

IVF :- In Vitro Fertilization procedure. This procedure comprises four steps. Embryo is a result of fusion of mother’s ovum & father’s sperm. During, IVF the embryo formation is achieved externally and artificially by collecting samples of father’s sperm and mother’s egg/s in a petri dish. In surrogacy, the IVF procedure is being followed. The embryo is being transferred in surrogate mother’s uterus.

Here, I would like to share my best friend’s experience of surrogacy. She is a doctor by profession. After 10 years of her marriage, she couldn’t conceive. She and her husband had tried every possible treatment.

She had gone through more than 50 cycles of IUI and also attempted IVF procedure 5 times. During that treatment she got pregnant twice. But despite of complete bed rest and OS tightening (stitching the opening of cervix), in 7^th month of pregnancy she suffered a miscarriage.

Sometimes, it is the pressure of society and family for a couple to compulsorily be parents (biological parents) and sometimes it is the couple’s strong will to have a child of their own. Anyway, we are not judging here, who is right, who is wrong.

Doctors found that her womb was not able to hold and carry the fetus for longer months as a result of which both the times she got pregnant with IVF she had miscarriages.

After numerous disappointments, the couple decided to go for surrogacy through an authentic and licensed surrogacy centre, keeping all the medico-legal procedures in mind – they started the treatment with their IVF Specialist. The Centre had arranged a lady who agreed to be a surrogate mother for their baby. After the entire procedure concluded, the surrogate lady gave birth to twin baby boys. Finally, my friend became a mom of 2 baby boys who are absolutely normal and healthy.

Medical science and an efficient guidance helped that couple achieve their long yearning wish of becoming parents. My motive to write this article is to make people aware that if you are hell bent on having your own biological child and have failed in conceiving naturally despite of several attempts (natural and medical treatments), surrogacy is a good option. Of course, one must follow all the medical and legal norms attached to surrogacy and ensure protection and safe health of the surrogate lady.

She is not just a uterus. She is a person. Give her that respect and concern.

*OS tightening – Cervical cerclage, also known as a cervical stitch, is a treatment for cervical incompetence or insufficiency, when the cervix starts to shorten and open too early during a pregnancy causing either a late miscarriage or preterm birth.
