Myth #1: Oral contraception causes weight gain

Fact: No. Not always. The minimum dose contraceptive pills do not have this side effect. The previously available high dose pills used to cause weight gain due to water retention. But, the minimum dose pills do not lead to water retention and weight gain. But oral contraceptive pills should always be taken under the supervision of a doctor.

Myth #2: Oral contraception pills have to be taken at the same time daily

Fact: It is always good to take the pill dose at the same time everyday so as to maintain the appropriate level of the hormones in the body and prevent ovulation effectively. ask-a-doctorMyth #3: Long term use of oral contraception pills causes difficulties in conceiving (pregnancy)

Fact: No. This is a myth. As soon as you stop taking pills, your hormones will start functioning and your cycle of ovulation will resume in 1 or 2 months. One can take oral contraceptive pills for 5 years without any major side effects.

Myth #4: Oral birth control pills start working immediately after consumption

Fact: Yes. One should start taking pill on 3rd to 5th day of their cycle and it will be effective 80% in 1st cycle and 100% from 2nd cycle if taken regularly without break.

Myth #5: Use of birth control pills may cause lack of sexual arousal in women

Fact: No. In fact, it can increase the sexual desire as the women is confident about her contraception’s effectiveness.

Myth #6: Pulling out before ejaculation does not cause pregnancy

Fact: No. It can cause pregnancy. A single drop of semen can contain millions of sperms. So pulling out before ejaculation is a highly non reliable method!

Myth #7: Using two condoms or reusing condoms is okay

Fact: It’s NOT okay to use two condoms. Using two condoms greatly increases the chances of friction between the two, causing rips and tears rendering them ineffective. One is good enough, if properly used. And in case one wants that additional protection against conception then they can be combined with another form of birth control method like pills, IUD (Intra-Uterine Device), diaphragms etc. It’s also not ok for a male condom to be paired with the woman wearing a female condom (for the same reasons).

Myth #8: The emergency contraceptive pill causes an abortion

Fact: No. If you are pregnant, the emergency contraceptive pill is not going to be effective. It is not going to cause abortion as abortion pill’s contents are different than emergency contraceptive pill.

Myth #9: You don’t need to take birth control if breastfeeding

Fact: When you are breastfeeding, you may not get your periods but still there are chances that you may conceive! So don’t take any chances and use either barrier method or progesterone only pills and be safe!

Myth #10: It is unhealthy to use birth control to tackle menstruation irregularities

Fact: Pills are commonly used by all the Gynecologists for regularizing menstrual cycles. There is nothing unhealthy about it!

Myth #11: Using condoms diminishes the man’s pleasure

Fact: No. It has a very thin layer of latex material which does not diminish pleasure. In fact, it can be more pleasurable experience as there is surety of contraception and non-conception!

Myth #12: You can use plastic wrap or a balloon if you don’t have a condom

Fact: No you cannot! Plastic wrap or a balloon will not give you proper protection in case of penetrative sex.
