She is one hell of a lady with the exceptional span of life seeing the countless events at different stages of her life. Padma Vibhushan Zohra Sehgal turns 102 has been living on of the most inspiring life as a woman, as an artist and that too with unbelievable grace, dignity and energy.
Born on 27 April 1912, Zohra lost vision of one eye at the age of 1 year because of glucoma. She lost her mother at a very early age. Sister’s failed marriage made her choose to focus on career and she traveled from Lahore to Alexandria (Europe) through car and ferry journey.
In 1935, she got a break from Uday Shankar and joined the dance troupe which traveled across Japan, Egypt, Europe and the US. She started teaching dance. In midst of the freedom movement she got married in 1942 with Kameshwar Sehgal, a young scientist, painter and dancer who was 8 years junior to Zohra. Just before 2 days of her marriage Zohra was arrested for supporting Gandhi’s Quit India Movement Against British.
After 1960s she remained active with rest of her life and she was featured in hands-full of bollywood movies in different roles. Indian audience always loved Zohra in that energetic, comic, spunky and sometimes nasty dadi’s role.
She was awarded with Padma Shri in 1998, Padma Bhushan in 2002 and finally Padma Vibhushan in 2010. With the immense contribution in art, dance and theatre, Zohra is a true inspiration for everyone!
