In the last 10 yrs, opinions have changed widely on carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates are considered to be the number one enemy of all woman trying to lose weight. Many people have a misconception that carbohydrates are bad and need to be avoided for weight loss. But the myth behind is that they are actually great for weight loss. Its just important to know which type of carbohydrate should one include in your daily meals.

1. Complex Carbohydrates – they are considered to be the “Good Guys”. They are rich in fiber which requires our body to work harder to digest and energy is released over a longer time. They naturally stimulate one’s metabolism, provide satiety and also are low in glycemic index.

The best complex carbohydrates for weight loss are –

  • Brown rice
  • Ragi or nachni
  • Broken wheat or daliya
  • Sorghum or jowar
  • Barley

2. Simple Carbohydrates – they are considered to be the “Bad Guys”. They comprise of sugar molecules which get quickly digested into our body. This energy is stored as glycogen in our cells and not used immediately, thus converted into fat. Extremely low in fiber and other nutrients, they contain empty calories and thus make one feel more tired. Also since all the simple carbohydrate foods are high in glycemic index, they are known to increase blood sugar levels and thus not recommended, especially for diabetics.

These are candies and other deserts, sugar coated cereals, aerated beverages and other drinks, white bread, etc.

Carbohydrates are everywhere. Its not just breads, rice or pasta, but also nuts, seeds, vegetables ,fruits, milk and dairy contain carbohydrates.

So are carbs good and bad? The answer is Both. But choosing the “Best carbohydrate Rich foods” is the key to weight loss.
