How I Overcame My Ovarian Cyst: Shraddha Bilwal Narrates Her Story

ovarian cyst

In 2010, my body started experiencing some transformations. I noticed the change in the regularity of my periods too. The pain was more than normal this time, and the periods were irregular. I talked with my mother about this, who advised me to take Ayurveda medicines as Allopathy has some side effects on the body. I thought of consulting a doctor. I consulted a gynecologist in Vadodara. He gave me a course of medicines for a month, which I completed. After that, I shifted to Ahmedabad for my job. The irregularity of periods was still pricking me. I had periods for a day, and then the bleeding discontinued for continuous three days. After that, they would start again with heavy flow and unbearable pain. My periods lasted for 10-12 days instead of normal 5-7.

This problem was affecting me very negatively. I always remained tensed and would get irritated very quickly. The workload at the office only added to my problems. Again, in Ahmedabad, I consulted a doctor at Vrunda hospital. I underwent a sonography there. It was for the very first time in my life that I was dealing with a health problem all by myself.

She told me that I had ovarian cyst, as if it was a very minor problem. Ovarian Cyst. I asked myself what is that? As I was hearing the term for the first time in life. I had two cysts in my ovaries, one of them was a chocolate cyst, and the other was a normal cyst. I asked her if it was something serious. She denied, explaining that it was all due to hormonal imbalance. At certain age, due to some changes in hormones, the body gives such reactions. This happens with most of the women, she said, and gave me course of medicines for six months.

I had to take thirty medicines every month. Since I am a journalist by profession, I had no regularity in my schedule, because of which I used to forget taking my medicines. I don’t know the reason, but my weight started increasing all of a sudden. Whenever I went for follow-up checkups, there was no change in the result . The cyst was present there. 3.5 cm.  Hard and firm.ask-a-doctorFinally doctor said that an operation was needed. I was reluctant at first, but then the implications on my health made me agree to this. I asked my parents about the operation but my mother told me that there was no need for an operation then. We must consult our own doctor.

Here in Ahmedabad, I was still stuck in the bunch of problems due to my increased weight. One of my friends suggested me that I should go to Doctor Chirag Amin. I went to him, underwent a sonography again, and still the cyst was there. In both the ovaries. Doctor again started the same course of medicines. But this time, I joined a gym, started working out and tried maintaining a regular lifestyle. For three months, I stayed with Dr. Amin’s treatment, but in the end, he too said the same thing: Operation.

The idea of operation was strangely alluring, as it gave me a hope of permanent recovery. Still, due to  family pressure, I went to Dr. Chandan Thorat for treatment. He started my treatment afresh after sonography and initial reports. The size of the cyst had increased now, it was 5 cm now. Doctor himself seemed worried about me. He asked me if I felt pain in my stomach. I said that it did not pain on regular basis, but I felt something going on in my stomach constantly. Operation seemed to be the only solution, according to the doctor.

On 21st January, 2014, I was operated. Before that, during November-December, I went through tremendous pain during my periods. And it was not just that. Fever, headache, bleeding, nausea…all came along.

I was warned beforehand that the cyst may remain even after the operation. But I wanted to try it anyways. I was admitted in the hospital. The anesthesia team arrived in the afternoon. I was admitted to the operation theatre. That was the time when I remembered everyone – my family, friends, enemies, even the puppies in my street…because I thought I was not going to return.

I started crying. Nurse gave me sleeping pills. Then, by the means of bottle, I was given a full body anesthesia.  I was unaware of what happened after that. When I opened my eyes, I was in my special room. The operation lasted for almost five hours. Sonography showed that I had two cysts, but while operation, doctors found out that I had three. Doctor gave me an injection in order to avoid such situations in the future.

It’s been five months since the operation. Now I get my periods without pain, but still it will take some time to get into the routine and stabilize my health.

Doctor advised me to consult someone before taking any kind of medication, especially the contraceptive medicines or medicines to change the timings of regular periods because the ovaries and the ovulation process get disturbed by it.

He also advised me to get proper sleep, eat healthy diet, avoid eating junk food frequently and maintain a regular lifestyle, not to take too much stress, and keep my hormones happy – To keep  myself  Healthy and Happy.
