In this year’s Lakme Fashion Week, Indian Supermodel, Carol Gracias who has also been seen previously on a Reality TV show Bigg Boss, walked the ramp in her pregnant self, showing off her baby bump for designer Gaurang Shah.
In an industry, where women are appreciated when they are tall and thin and have got “perfect looks”, this seems to be a welcome change by the model-designer duo (Carol & Gaurang) to take this bold step and break the stereotype of promoting specific body type on the ramp.
Pregnant Carol Gracias was looking absolutely adorable and gorgeous in a pink and green saree, the entire clothing line by designer Gaurang Shah for women of various sizes and body types. Women working in the Fashion and Entertainment industry like actresses, models, dancers have so much pressure all the time to look perfect even during or after their pregnancy. Don’t we remember all that pressure Aishwarya Rai Bachchan had to undergo by her critics for her post-pregnancy weight loss.
Previously, international models like Alessandra Ambrosio and Rafaella Fico have also walked ramp showing off their baby bump with confidence. There have also been other Italian modelling shows where the models have walked the ramp carrying their babies with them.
These pictures of pregnant women (choosing not to say, ‘models’ here) walking the ramp, just celebrates pregnancy and motherhood.
This is a welcoming trend in the Fashion industry, where the models have been previously reported to have various kind of eating disorders to achieve and fit into the stereotypical image of a perfectly sized and beautiful woman, also promoting the “size zero” fad among young girls and body – image issues.
Recently, in UK an ad by the luxury brand – Gucci was banned by the country’s Advertising Authority,
because the featured model in the ad looked ‘unhealthily thin‘.
Here’s to accepting and embracing a healthy and positive body image! 🙂
