Diabetes is quite common disease. Let us have a look at how it affects our body.

Diabetes occurs when there is rise in the glucose (sugar) in our blood. Insulin is made by cells in pancreas, which prevent the rise of the sugar level in blood. When these cells are destroyed, type 1 diabetes is identified. When there is lack of insulin or body stops reacting to it, type 2 diabetes is identified.

Gestational diabetes is one of the complications during pregnancy that needs to be managed carefully. Usually, it subsides post pregnancy but sometimes it doesn’t. It is generated because pregnancy hormones reduce insulin demand but goes back to normal post childbirth.

It is ideal to have a check-up done within 2-3 months of post delivery to know whether the glucose levels are back to normal or not. This will help the new mothers to keep a check on their health. In last few decades, there has been a rise in the number of new mothers with gestational diabetes.

Factors responsible for it:

  • Family history of diabetes
  • Weight above the usual range
