Every girl, every woman in her lifetime at least for once will face problems of irregular periods or will struggle with her “period” days.

Let’s get some primary understanding on menstruation, the reasons behind irregular periods and how one can deal with it.

What’s a normal period?

period

  • In case of menstruation, Count days and not month.
  • Every woman is different and every woman’s body follows her own rhythm of menstrual cycle.
  • Ideally, on an average, women get their periods every 28 days but a normal cycle lasts anywhere from 21 to 35 days. Subtle variations in menstrual cycle are normal.
  • On an average, a period lasts between 3 to 5 days

Probable Causes of irregular periods

1. Stress

Stress is the most common cause of irregular periods. Stress can lead to certain hormonal changes in the body that could affect the time and flow of your period cycle. Are you facing exam pressure, work pressure or relationship related stress?? Then, try to relieve yourself and relax before it starts affecting your periods.

2. Diet

If you’re eating a diet consisting of junk food and that’s rich in unhealthy carbs or if you’ve gained weight, your body will produce varying levels of certain hormones, affecting your menstrual cycle. The same goes for women as they lose weight. Excessive consumption of alcohol is also a causative factor to irregular periods, too much of drinking can cause damage to the liver and may interfere with how well it metabolizes period-normalizing hormones.

3. Birth Control Pills

It can take several months for your body to get used to the dose of hormones birth control pills deliver.

4. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

A fairly common complication among females these days, this condition is characterized by formation of cysts in the ovaries, that lead to irregular periods. Other symptoms of the condition include abnormal hair growth, weight gain, dandruff and infertility.

5. Menopause

As with pregnancy, this time of life happens when hormone levels in the body begin to shift. Irregular periods can start as early as 10 years before menopause sets in (usually when a woman is in her late 40s or early 50s).

6. Lifestyle habits

Lifestyle habits like irregular eating timings and erratic sleeping hours do affect menstrual cycle in the long run. Other lifestyle related disorders like obesity can also be one of the factors.

7. Thyroid disorders

Hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, a physical health condition, with abnormal thyroid hormone levels also contribute to irregular periods.

8. Anemia

Anemia, a condition arising from low level of hemoglobin in the blood, not only causes fatigue in the body but can affect period pattern causing irregular periods.
