Periods are not the best time of the month for us females! It is tiring and difficult to go through the pain, cramps, and PMS every month. If this wasn’t enough to deal with, a recent study conducted by The Endocrine Society suggests that women tend to sleep less or having trouble in falling asleep while being on their periods.
This is a revelation as well as shocking considering that women already have less hours to sleep. With the tight schedules and multi-tasking, it becomes quite difficult to have the “required” amount of rest and sleep; worsening the situation here are the periods.
The researchers tracked some women’s sleep starting from a week post their date to the first day of their periods. It was seen that women tend to have disturbed and uneven sleep during this time.
Having hard time in falling asleep?
The study looked into the diet of these women to figure out if that had a direct or indirect effect on their sleep. They compared two diets – one which was their regular and the other where their diet has deduction of carbs by 55 %. They noticed that women still had problems in sleeping during night even after having carbohydrate controlled diet.
Therefore, it was understood that the lack of sleep or troubled sleep could be due to hormonal changes or hormonal imbalances during menstrual cycle.
If you too are the one who experiences lack of sleep, disturbed sleep, or no sleep; consider following tips.
How to fix it!
- Be aware of your sleep cycle around your periods and give it some TLC.
- Try food that help in maintaining the hormonal imbalance
- Use some activities such as meditating or some ‘me” time before sleeping to calm your senses.
- Avoid diets but don’t give in to all cravings.
- Incorporate some magnesium supplement during your sleep time
- Try to get the right amount of rest even if you have troubled sleep as it will help your body to relax
- Avoid stress related activities, people, conversations, and environment.
Give yourself some more time during this time as you need it!
